The Healthcare Essentials: Understanding Policy, Protection, and Advocacy through the lense of EMS offers a personal insight into the realities of EMS and healthcare work. Through my own experiences, I explore the challenges, sacrifices, and systemic failures that shape the industry. This book is not just a reflection—it’s a call to action. It urges readers to recognize the struggles of frontline workers, question the systems that exploit them, and fight for real change. Whether you’re an EMT, a healthcare worker, or someone who believes in justice, this book will challenge you to think critically and take action in the face of a broken system.

The Initiative
The Healthcare Guardians Initiative is dedicated to establishing a universal code of conduct and ethics that protects both healthcare workers and patients. Our mission is to ensure equitable healthcare standards by advocating for policies that recognize healthcare as a fundamental human right rather than a privilege.
At the heart of this initiative is the Traiteur Clause and the E.M.B.E.R framework, a guiding principle that upholds the ethical treatment of all individuals in the healthcare system, prioritizing fair access, patient safety, and worker protections. The initiative goes beyond individual interactions—it seeks to foster community-building that enriches not only the well-being of people but also the health of the environment in which they live.
To achieve this, The Healthcare Guardians work to push policies that create a standardized framework of ethics and responsibilities in healthcare. Recognizing the interconnectedness of Public Health, we emphasize that the responsibility for healthcare does not solely rest on the government but must also be upheld by corporations, insurance agencies, and other key stakeholders. These entities must be held accountable for ensuring accessibility, affordability, and quality of care.
By advocating for system-wide integration of ethical healthcare practices, The Healthcare Guardians strive to embed the notion that health is a right—not an afterthought. Our goal is to reshape policies, reform industry standards, and redefine societal expectations so that healthcare is no longer treated as a business first, but as a fundamental necessity for all.
THE Author
THe founder of the healthcare guardians.
Khianna Deseide is a 21-year-old Public Health student at SUNY Brockport, where she is pursuing a future dedicated to creating positive change in both healthcare and society. Born in the United States but raised in Kingston, Jamaica, until the age of six, Khianna brings a unique cultural perspective to her work. After moving back to the U.S., she grew up in Jamaica, Queens, where she began to notice the disparities in healthcare and social systems around her.
Khianna's passion for writing and creativity has always been a driving force in her life. From a young age, she found solace and expression in art and storytelling. Writing became her tool for change, and as she developed, it became clear that her creative abilities could be harnessed not just for personal expression, but also for advocacy.
At 15, Khianna began her journey in advocacy, working across various sectors including nonprofits, politics, and healthcare. This early exposure allowed her to witness firsthand the systemic inequities in place and deepened her commitment to finding solutions. Her experiences in these fields opened her eyes to the lack of support for communities in need, particularly in the realms of healthcare and education.
Her background in both advocacy and healthcare has shaped her understanding of the vital intersection between public health, justice, and the need for reform. Khianna is deeply passionate about addressing these issues, particularly when it comes to ensuring healthcare workers—especially those in the EMS field—are treated with the respect, support, and protections they deserve. She envisions a future where everyone has access to equitable healthcare, and she continues to use her writing and creative skills to further this cause.
Khianna believes that justice is not just an ideal, but a necessity that must be fought for, both through policy changes and by elevating the voices of those who are often overlooked. She views every opportunity—whether through writing, art, or direct action—as a chance to inspire change and break down the barriers that divide us.
“My goal is to hold government entities, corporations, agencies, and private insurance companies accountable by challenging them to take responsibility for improving conditions .”
— Khianna Deseide, The Healthcare Guardian Founder
“Advocacy for healthcare workers and patients is a cornerstone of public health. It is about ensuring that those who provide and receive care are treated with dignity, respect, and fairness.”
